چکیده

In response to the major changes taking place across the Arctic climatic, environmental, economic, social, industrial there is an increasing need for improved land cover/land use change information, especially remotely sensed data, by indigenous reindeer herders on the characterization of pasture quality and migratory routes, such as vegetation distribution, snow cover, infrastructure development, and pasture damages due to fires. This paper describes some of the remote sensing capabilities useful for reindeer husbandry and preliminary results of the first year of a project, “Reindeer Mapper”, a remote sensing and GIS-based system to bring together space technologies with indigenous knowledge for improved mapping of parameters critical to sustainable reindeer husbandry.

Research, part of a Special Feature on Heterogeneity and Resilience of Human-Rangifer Systems: A CircumArctic Synthesis Modeling Regional Dynamics of Human–Rangifer Systems: a Framework for Comparative Analysis

Theoretical models of interaction between wild and domestic reindeer (Rangifer tarandus; caribou in North America) can help explain observed social–ecological dynamics of arctic hunting and husbandry systems. Different modes of hunting and husbandry incorporate strategies to mitigate effects of differing patterns of environmental uncertainty. Simulations of simple models of harvested wild and d...

Vitamin D status of northern indigenous people of Russia leading traditional and “modernized” way of life

Background Vitamin D status in groups of northern indigenous people of Russia leading close to traditional (seminomadic reindeer herding), post-traditional (in settlements) or "modernized" (in towns) way of life was analysed. Design The survey study groups consisted of 178 Nenets and Komi aged 18-60 living in the Arctic (66-67°N). Urban Komi, Udmurts and Komi-Permiaks (n=150) living in a non-Ar...

High-latitude Sustainability: options for enhancing the resilience of northern countries to rapid social and environmental change: a message to policy makers.

The eight arctic and boreal nations are now experiencing unprecedented environmental and social changes. The following seven papers in this Ambio issue summarize results that explain why northern countries might be either unusually resilient or vulnerable to these changes. These papers result from a meeting sponsored by the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry and the International...

Colonizing the High Arctic: Mitochondrial DNA Reveals Common Origin of Eurasian Archipelagic Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus)

In light of current debates on global climate change it has become important to know more on how large, roaming species have responded to environmental change in the past. Using the highly variable mitochondrial control region, we revisit theories of Rangifer colonization and propose that the High Arctic archipelagos of Svalbard, Franz Josef Land, and Novaia Zemlia were colonized by reindeer fr...
